4 out of 5 stars could be better   March 21, 2008

There are some good episodes, and some terrible. All the best episodes that I remember seeing on BBC from my school days are here, but I think 'the best of the outer limits' would have been better, drawn from the whole 1960's show. Despite the B/W and the rubber suits, some of the effects are quite good, and generally better than the new series, in story and atmosphere. I especially like 'The Mutant, The Guests, The man who was never born, Nightmare, Don't open till doomsday, and Forms of things unknown. Episodes which should have been left out.. ZZZZZ, Controlled experiment, Tourist attraction.
32 episodes in total.

5 out of 5 stars Poor Special Effects, Outstanding Stories...   June 4, 2007

while todays version is just the opposite: color, great (?) CGI effects, and snooze inducing stories that weve seen before. A dozen times at least.
WHY on earth do they have to call it the 'Outer Limits'? THAT show was on in 1963.

This new program-call it 'Weird Stories' or 'Tales of the Strange' etc.

But why call it The Outer Limits? Dont sully the name of a legendary program.

Despite it being B&W-the stories had an air of Paranoia about them (which was justified, as we find out today)
And I loved the stories about Physics gone mad-theres your source for DONNIE DARKO.
All with the eerie music building to a climax, by Dominic Frontiere.
Stories that made you THINK-something that is missing from todays versions.
The program was just a little too much for the network boys trying to push laundry detergent, Barbie dolls, and back then, Cigarettes!

5 out of 5 stars THE Sci-fi Anthology show.(With a Gothic Twist)   May 23, 2007

The originality of this show is outstanding, it is the yardstick by which all other Sci-Fi Anthology shows have to be measured. Nearly every episode is an absolute Gem.
I can still remember as a child having to go out the room when "The Children of Spider County's","Bear" appeared. (Well I was a nervous child.)
Stefano was pressurised by "external forces" to include a monster of the week even when the story was strong enough not to need one.
One of those monsters the Zanti's have got to be THE most weird and wackiest aliens that have ever been shown on TV.
(Check out my customer image.)

This show had the guts to step outside the formulaic format and take risks.
(Example :~ comedy episodes like Controlled Experiment.)
Everything from the directing, the editing, the filming and the lighting are so stylishly done, you find yourself overlooking plot deficiencies.
This show is only worthy of praise.

32 episodes,Originally broadcast:~16/9/63-4/5/64.
I have both Region 1 & 2 versions plus a few NTSC Videotapes.
On my region 2 version the 8 disc's are single sided.
THIS IS HOW TV SCI-FI SHOULD BE MADE!

3 out of 5 stars Old but interesting all the same   November 4, 2006

I originally only bought this set out of curiosity as I had seen many episodes from The New Outer Limits and wanted to see where the series had come from to begin with. Although there are many rather bad episodes in this series you do get the odd good ones, including ZZZZZ and Fun & Games, that stands up for itself despite being over thirty years old. Other than these few good ones most of the episodes fall into the Beware Communists and Human Self Destruction archetypes that prevailed in fiction during the time that they were made. It is also fun looking for guest actors that went on to do bigger and better things later in life.

4 out of 5 stars Classic series.   November 1, 2006

The Outer Limits series are a worthy addition to your DVD collection! A few "dud" episodes are contained in the series in my humble opinion but 90 per cent of the series is wonderful. After watching this series it makes you think about some of the contempory science fiction movies and tv shows that have borrowed ideas from these classic episodes. Pioneering Stuff! A great box set to own along with season 2, (only 2 original series were made) very enjoyable.
