2 out of 5 stars Beware if you have a small dog   December 15, 2008
R. Slagle (Ohio)
For the first couple months, we only used the collar and the remote control - no fence. It worked quite well then, but we only needed to use levels 1 - 3 on the remote to correct the dog. Level 3 would make him jump pretty good, so we used it very sparingly.

When we finally buried the wire and started testing, we found the lowest setting the fence allows is equivalent to about a level 7 on the remote (estimate) which was far higher than he had ever experienced. The first and only time the dog encountered this level during his training was a horrible experience that would've put him in therapy if he was a person. It is now 4 months later, and I sometimes have to get my wife to let him outside because he is still occasionally afraid to go out when I'm around.

Now the remote doesn't work anymore, and I have no idea why.

My dog is now weird, and in part I blame Innotek.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product and Service!   November 18, 2008
Rainy Hafermann (Fond du Lac, WI USA)

When I received this product, the battery charger would not charge the collars. Innotek sent me a new one the same day I called them! We rented a trench digger & burying the wire 3 inches underground was a snap! I had a few questions about how the collars worked and the Innotek rep was very helpful and courteous.
I have two dogs. One is a German Shepherd, and the other a smaller spaniel mix. I trained both dogs with the flags. Then put the collars on. The spaniel got zapped one time and has never once tried to go within 5 feet of the flags again! My Shepherd was more stubborn. She tested the fence 5 different times in a 2 week period. She finally gave in and hasn't tried to go near the boundary in the last 3 months.
This product works great and my dogs love it, because they can run all over the yard. I don't even have to put the collars on half the time and my dogs still don't go near the boundaries. I only have to charge the collars once every 4 days or so. They hold their charge a long time.
I highly recommend this product! I'm happy and my dogs are even happier!

1 out of 5 stars Defective product - not worth the price   September 30, 2008

I received this product and the collar wouldn't charge. I contacted the manufacturer for a replacement but they are out of stock and won't be able to send a replacement for at least 14 days. This system cost more than others and I expected the quality would be higher. For the price, this is completely unacceptable. I would not recommend purchasing this item.

5 out of 5 stars Even keeps our Sheltie from chasing cows!!!   September 10, 2008

I've been extremely happy with our Innotek system and what happened today sent me to the computer to write this review.

We live on a farm next to a county highway. We have a Sheltie and we were having a terrible time keeping him from chasing ours and our neighbors cows (not good)every chance he got to run out off his leash. He was also fond of chasing cars, motorcycles, bicycles (again, not good). I understand that this is what this breed does but it wasn't working for us to have a housedog that mucked around in the cowshed for hours chasing cattle, risking hurting someone on a bike, hurting the neighbors animals.
Even before we installed the yard portion, we were able to get the dog to quit his non-stop barking in the house within about 2 days using the remote and the collar.
We set up the system using something my husband rented at a hardware store (line layer??) This made it pretty quick to put the wire in. We went through all the steps with the flags, etc and he was fully trained within less than two weeks time. He quickly learned his boundries and was very happy running in the yard, but stayed away from the cows and cars.
What happened today was that one of the cows go out of the pasture and was standing right in the yard. I thought "oh no...he's going to run through to get that cow back where she belongs!!!" But he didn't !! He chased her out of his "area" then stopped and kept barking from the edge.

When I purchased this unit I didn't really have much hope that a dog with such a strong instinct to herd could be "untrained". We are happy with it and Peanut is happy that he can run outside off his chain.

4 out of 5 stars Easy To Use/Somewhat Inconsistent Performance   May 12, 2008

We recently purchased this product from Amazon. The instructions and training DVD were well put together and make it easy for anyone to install this invisible fence. Your two real options are to trench and bury the wire or to use yard staples to stable the wire to the ground. There's no doubt that trenching is the best method.

We installed and tested the product fairly quickly, and began training our German Shepherd puppy. Training is straight forward and you cannot underemphasize the importance of time and training. I found that the fence can be somewhat inconsistent at times, as our dog has learned the boundaries but occassionaly tests the boundaries and I do not hear an audible beep and there have been times where I question whether the dog gets a shock when she has gone over the fence line. I cannot yet trust her (after several months) with not going over the fence line, as she has done it on occassion without correction, and other times attempts to and does get the correction stimulation.

I do like the correction remote on the system, as our dog likes to jump. When she jumps I use the remote to provide stimulation, but she has learned that if she hears the tone she needs to get her act together before the collar "bites her". The only complaint with the remote is that you must either put it in your pocket (which allows for accidental correction to the dog when the button is pushed) or use the lanyard which isn't all that effective. I would like to see a remote with a clip in which I can clip to a pocket.

Overall a good system, but I need to get to the bottom of the inconsistent corrections from the fence.
